Drawing

A vector editor that knows it is drawing a carpet.

In Corel or Illustrator the line is good but there are no knots. In Photoshop there are knots but the line turns to pixels. Toranj has both in one file, and everything you draw stays editable at any density.

Draw here with your finger or mouse.

Library

Change the flower once. Every copy changes.

Keep your medallions, corners and border motifs in the library. Each copy sits on a knot and not between two, so two copies of one flower weave exactly alike, anywhere on the carpet.

The tools you use every minute, within reach

Select, pen, shapes, the spiral for islimi work, the region bucket, fill and line. Keys match what designers already know: V, P, M, K. Everything else is one search away in the command palette, ⌘K.

Symmetry where you want it

Four-way, left and right, or top and bottom across the carpet. Or symmetry inside one motif, so you draw half a flower and get the whole one. A pictorial carpet can leave it off.

Borders from a repeating unit

On an imported map, a border band can be filled from one unit: repeated along the top and mirrored at the bottom. The sides take a unit of their own, because knots are not square and a turned motif comes out stretched. A corner can have its own unit too. In a vector design you lay out the border with motifs from the library.

Motifs that weave alike

A motif from the library sits with its middle on a knot and its size on a fixed step, about 9% apart. Two copies of a flower come out identical, and a mirrored copy comes out exactly mirrored.

A library you can share

Keep medallions, corners and border motifs in the library. When one is updated, designs that use it are offered the new version. On the Studio plan a library can be shared with another workspace.

Photos and SVG, as a starting point

Bring in a photo as a layer to trace over, or an SVG as drawing you can edit. Named groups stay groups and keep their names.
