Carpet design software that runs in your browser

One drawing. Any loom.

You draw once, in vectors. Whenever an order comes in, Toranj gives you the knot map for the loom it is going to: 40 raj by hand, 70 raj for a tableau, 700 reed by machine.

By invitation for now. No card needed.

Press N and the drawing turns into knots.

You see the carpet the way it will come off the loom, with the handles and guides out of the way. Press N again and you are back where you were. Nothing has changed.

Every knot has an address.

This is the level the workshop works at, so it is the level the file has to be right at. The drawing and the knots stay in step, and what you approve is what gets woven.

The usual problem

A map drawn for 40 raj is only good for 40 raj.

Then the buyer wants the same design at 50 raj, or a size smaller. When a map is pixels, that means resizing it and cleaning it knot by knot, or drawing it again. In Toranj the design stays a drawing and the knots are worked out from it. A new loom means a new map, and nobody redraws anything.

40 raj map, enlarged for 50Lines break and curves step unevenly. Someone now has to fix this knot by knot.
The same drawing, woven at 50Every line comes out whole, at the knot count the loom actually has.

Both pictures are worked out in this page, from the same medallion.

Try it

Move this carpet to another loom.

This is running in the page, on the drawing you just saw. Drag the slider and the knots are worked out again.

A raj is the number of knots across 7 cm. That is why this patch is always the same width.

The knot counts use the same sums as the service. The picture is a simplified weave made for this page.

Drawing

Draw one quarter. The carpet follows.

Pen, shapes, islimi spirals and a paint bucket, on a canvas that knows it is a carpet. Symmetry works on the whole carpet or inside a single motif.

How drawing works

Draw here with your finger or mouse.

Library

Change the flower once. Every copy changes.

Keep your medallions, corners and border motifs in the library. Each copy sits on a knot and not between two, so two copies of one flower weave exactly alike, anywhere on the carpet.

How the library works

Colour

Try it on another ground before anyone dyes wool.

One design can hold several colourways. Each colour has its dyer's name and a share of the carpet, and that share updates with each save. The figures here are counted from the knots in this picture.

How colour works

    For the workshop

Yarn 3 is yarn 3, on every sheet.

A point paper PDF cut into halves or quarters. An 8-bit BMP for Jacquard software. A PNG, and a colour table in CSV. They all number the yarns the same way, so the weaver, the machine operator and the person buying wool are reading the same list.

    Sharing

Show the buyer the design without sending a file.

Everyone gets a link of their own. They watch the design as it is drawn and pin comments on it, and they cost you nothing. You can see who is looking right now, and one click ends their access.

    For developers

Connect your shop or your factory system.

A documented REST API, one-time links that open the editor on a single design, and an MCP server so an AI assistant can work in a design under its own name, without the right to approve anything.

    Who it suits

If one of these sounds like your week.

    You run a workshop

Orders arrive in different sizes and qualities, and most of them are versions of one design. You want to draw it once and have each order's map the same day, with the yarn worked out and a sheet your weaver can follow.

    You design on your own

You draw for several workshops and you are tired of sending pictures back and forth. You want the client to see the work where it is, comment on the exact flower, and not send a file until they have paid.

You run a brand or you export

Your buyer is in another country and your weavers are in Kashan or Tabriz. You need one design both of them can read, in their own language, with a clear record of who approved what.

    Beside the tools you know

Tooba, Booria, Naqsh Saz, Photoshop. Which one does Toranj replace?

Not all of them. These programs have been at work for years, and some do things Toranj does not, such as coded maps and turning scans into maps. Toranj differs elsewhere: the design stays vector, it opens on Mac or Windows with no installation or lock, and the buyer comments on the design by their own link.

Better you hear it from us

What Toranj does not do yet.

    • Reweaving is for vector designs only

A map you import stays knots and is not woven again at another loom. A design drawn with whole-carpet symmetry is complete only at its home loom for now; at another loom you see just the part that was drawn.

    • No coded or audio maps

What goes to the weaver is point paper in PDF. If your weavers use coded maps or audio map readers, Tooba has both and Naqsh Saz has coded maps.

    • A scan does not become a map

A JPEG comes in as an approximate map with fewer colours, one pixel to a knot. The grid of a scanned map is not detected. A photo can sit in a layer for tracing. For serious scan work, Tooba, Booria, Naqsh Saz and Galaincha have the tools.

    • No half knots, no Turkish or Isfahan raj

A raj here is knots across 7 cm, and knot shape is set apart. If you work in half knots or Isfahan khaft, Naqsh Saz has them.

    • The machine file is BMP only

An 8-bit BMP that Jacquard software reads. No JC5 or EP files, so that step stays in the machine's own software. If your factory tufts, look at NedGraphics Tuft or Pointcarré.

    • No pile simulation or room view

You see the carpet flat and as knots. For weave simulation or a room scene you will need another tool for now.

    • The drawing editor is in Persian

The site, the dashboard, sharing and the API work in English and Persian. The editor's own menus are Persian for now.

    Questions

What people ask before they start.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Toranj opens in a browser on Mac or Windows, and we test it on Chrome. You will want a reasonably large screen for drawing. It needs an internet connection, because your designs live on the server.

I work in Tooba or Naqsh Saz. Do I have to give them up?

No need. Toranj writes 8-bit indexed BMP and reads it knot for knot. You can draw here and take the file to your current program for a coded or audio map. We have not tried this path on those programs yet, so test it with a small design first.

Can I bring the maps I already have?

Yes. TIFF, BMP and 8-bit indexed PNG come in knot for knot. SVG comes in as drawing you can edit, with its own colours. Files that have been through JPEG come in as an approximation, and Toranj tells you so. An imported map stays knots; to take it to another raj you draw the design in vectors.

    Who can see my designs?

Nobody outside your workspace, unless you share with them. Someone you share a design with sees it at full resolution. Their page has no export button, but that is not a technical lock, so a share goes to a named person and ends when you end it. We do not use your designs to train AI models.

Does my weaver need an account?

No. Send the PDF. If you want them to follow the design live, the link you send signs them in to that one design and nothing else, and it is free.

How big a carpet can it handle?

The largest carpets we have tested on our own machine are 1,000 × 1,725 knots, about 1.7 million knots, with drawings of over a thousand motifs. A file you import has to be under 4 MB for now. If yours is larger, tell us and we will try it with you.

    What do I pay for?

Seats for the people who draw. Viewers, reviewers, approvers and buyers are free. The free plan holds two editors and five designs and has no time limit. We are still setting paid prices with our first workshops.

Draw a small medallion and put it on three looms.

Tell us about your workshop and we will send you a link. Then draw a small medallion and change its raj and size.
